Route Description:
A draft version of the route will be made available on one of the online mapping websites on Feb. 12, 2012 with a final official version released May 15, 2012.

Northern California and in particular the greater Bay Area stretching from Santa Clara County to Mendocino County has some of the best riding terrain to be found in the US. The San Francisco Randonneurs 2012 1000km route has been designed to take riders to as many of the best local and near-local riding destinations as possible along a 1000km route.

The route begins in San Jose and heads east toward Mt. Hamilton and the historic Lick Observatory. The route then crosses the San Antonio Valley and heads toward Livermore, CA via Mines Road. From Livermore the route will transition from open ranch land to a short stretch that mixes Regional Parks and suburban terrain before reaching the Carquinez Strait. Riders will cross the Zampa Bridge on their way to Lake Herman Road and the view of the Mothball Fleet, then head toward the vineyards in Wooden, Napa and Alexander Valleys on their way to the control in Cloverdale, CA.

The route continues toward the coast at the mouth of the Navarro River before heading north on an out-and-back leg to Mendocino, and then south to Jenner, CA. From here the route goes up the Russian River back to Wine Country and a 2nd control at Cloverdale, CA.

Finally, the route returns to the coast at Jenner, CA and traverses several valleys and canyons in Southern Sonoma and Marin Counties before the finish in San Francisco after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and passing through the National Park in the Presidio.

Logistics
Accommodations: The 1000km route was designed to be ridden either straight through, or in three 'daily' segments with decreasing daily mileage and with a single location serving the two 'overnight' controls at the end of 'Day 1' and 'Day 2' in Cloverdale. Details for the hotels at the start control (San Jose), the two overnight controls (Cloverdale) and the finish control (San Francisco) are still being finalized and will be posted here when completed. Riders will make their own reservations for any lodging at these controls or elsewhere on the route.

SFR will provide bag drop services from San Jose, to Cloverdale and back to San Francisco. Riders needing additional coordination for transportation before and after the event should contact rba@sfrandonneurs.org.

Most of the route will be supported by SAG or Sweep vehicles.
