Medals commemorating RUSA's 10th anniversary event

The results of the 200km last weekend (Aug 17 2008) have been finalized by RUSA. If you want to purchase a medal commemorating RUSA's 10th anniversary, you can buy the medals (and any other medals you qualify for) through the RUSA online store. A link to the store is found on the RUSA.org main page. When you purchase the medal, it will be listed as out of stock. We knew this beforehand so that isn't a worry. Pre-sales of the medal sold out all of the first run. RUSA will take orders until 9-14-08 and then place one more order, and ship the medals some time in late October.

rob hawks
sfr rba

Route notes for 8-17-08 brevet

Here are some notes from Bruce Berg, who pre-rode the route with Rich Fisher and me on 8-09-08. I've added some comments as well.
Notes on the 200k route. Not all hazards can be spotted and noted. Here are some comments for hazards or issues we did notice:

There are numerous locations along the route that lend themselves quite well to pacelines. However, the pavement in numerous areas has deteriorated badly in local spots and there are areas of loose pavement [Think loose cobbles] and potholes. This is most noticeable in the first half of the ride and is most dramatic on Bohemian Highway to Occidental. There are also several miles of patched trench on the descent from Occidental to Monte Rio with bad cracks and potholes. If you are in the front of a paceline, it's really your job to point these out to those behind you.

If you need a place to stop in the 29 miles between Marshall and the finish, the Nicasio store works quite well. The gent running the store is very friendly especially so to bicyclists.

On the way out, there really isn't a place to get supplies between the start and Valley Ford except at Nicasio at mile 11.

The ride has about 6,300' of climbing, compared to about 7,100' for the better known SF 200k ride. [NB: this is from a VDO computer. On my Blackburn Delphi 6.0, I got 8100'. That computer is usually about 10-12% higher than say a Polar]

Remember to ride single file, particularly on highway's 116 and 1. The turn from Bohemian onto River Road (116) is a T intersection and the cross traffic does not stop. A surprising amount of traffic on highway 1. [Not sure what was going on, but I've never seen it so busy. It does not make the roads unsafe, just that there is more traffic]

[from Monte Rio, it is ok to take Moscow Road, which is the left turn before the turn to cross the Russian River. This will avoid the narrow section on 116.]

The control at the Marshall store was extremely busy last weekend. The wait was almost 15 minutes to buy milk and they ran out of chowder. Be patient.

Be careful not to ride past Diekmanns in Bodega Bay. It is on your right near the bottom of a descent coming into town and the store faces the direction you are going it is difficult to see.

If you aren't in a hurry, there are numerous locations where the blackberries looked wonderful. Just remember to get out of the roadway.

Three places to stop in Duncans Mills. The general store on the north side of hwy 116 is probably the fastest. There is a nice café in the same group of shops, slightly east of the general store. There is a bakery café on the south side of hwy 116 that is pretty good as well.

August 17th brevet signups so far

Hi all,

So far we have about 30 signups for the August 17th brevet. I'm going to get the brevet cards printed today after work (workers ride is tomorrow 08/09) and wondered if people could tell me if
they are intending to still sign up but just haven't sent in their
registration form yet. This will help me determine how many cards to
have printed.

If you know today, Aug 8th, that you intend to sign up but haven't yet, please
let me know before 3pm today so I can make sure to order enough cards.

We have enough volunteers to work the start so that same day sign up
can be done. For those whose plans won't allow them to
decide on riding until late next week, please send me email by
Saturday, 5pm on the 16th to let me know you will sign up same
day. Bringing a signed release form and registration would certainly
help the volunteers working the start. We will have a limited
number of extra brevet cards on hand.

2008 August and October 200km brevets

Hi all,

Please visit the Forms & Downloads page

There, you'll find the updated signup form for the 2008 August and October 200km brevets. A few notes, in advance of a more thorough document soon to be online as well:

The start location for the August 200km will be the Park and Ride off of Highway 101, at Lucas Valley Road, north of San Rafael. 1a. The route will be Nicasio, Valley Ford, Monte Rio, Jenner (just south of town), Bodega Bay, Marshall, Nicasio and back.

Anyone volunteering to staff the August 17th brevet has the option of riding the Santa Cruz 200km brevet on August 16th for free. (we are hosting any SCR volunteers who wish to ride our brevet after working their SCR brevet). If you want to volunteer for the SFR brevet, send mail to rba@sfrandonneurs.org.

While this is not an ACP event, there will be medals available to current RUSA members who finish the brevet. Purchase of these medals will be through RUSA.

I will *probably* also hold a workers ride about a week before the event. I have several volunteers already for the August ride and some of them can't do any ride on that weekend. Confirmation of this volunteer option will be sent at a later date.

The start location for the October 200km will be the Hercules transit station (park and ride). The route is not finalized yet.

Looking way down the road for future events, my plan as of right now is ....
